Bring it, buy it used or rent it?
To bring or not to bring, what was the question?
Here are several factors to consider:
- How long do you plan to be on Maui?
- What time of year are you coming?
- What kind of equipment do you own?
- How much of a hassle you can tolerate with the airlines.
- Your ability level and what kind of sailing you want to do.
For convenience, selection, and experimentation, rental equipment is
the best way to go.
If you plan to come to Maui for two weeks or less it makes very little sense
to bring your own equipment. This goes for whatever time of year you are
coming and whatever type of equipment you own. The expense and hassle factors
are just too great. The list of gear you would have to bring to insure that
you were covered for every possible sailing condition is just too long.
If you are coming for a month or more and you are dying to use that new slalom
board you just bought, or you just wish to sail your own gear because its comfortable
for you, or maybe you just want to save a few bucks, then go ahead and bring it.
However, having the right equipment for the right conditions makes sailing alot
more enjoyable. Remember, you are spending good money to come all the way to Maui
for a sailing holiday, you should have the right equipment to sail when you get
here. You might want to email the folks at Maui
Windsurfari. They have loads of experience in this area. Make sure to tell
them when you're coming, what kind of gear you have, and your ability level.
What about buying used equipment when I get here?
If you are coming for a month or more and you don't have a big equipment
budget you might consider this option. Maui is one of the best places anywhere
to buy and sell used equipment. The prices are usually low and the selection
is great.
A weekly buy and sell magazine called the Bulletin comes out every Friday
and usually has many equipment listings. Buying equipment this way
can be risky and you should be able to tell good equipment from
junk. A safer way to get used equipment is through the shops. The prices
may or may not be higher but the good shops will stand behind what they
sell and help you resell it when you leave.you. HiTech Surfsports has a
wide selection of new and used equipment.
What about buying new equipment.?
Maui is a great place to buy new windsurf equipment. Some of
the finest custom boards anywhere are manufactured locally, as well as components
like fins, booms, and wet gear. Boards can be manufactured to your custom
specifications and be ready for you to sail when you get here, or take home
when you leave. The folks at Hitech are very knowledgable in this area.
